Preamble
From my asthma, from the medical corset of my sister, from the murder (Gal-Eta) in my neighborhood, from Saint-martin, from my graffiti years, from the waves, from my Bask origin, from Biarritz., I kept the misunderstanding, the thirst for freedom, the experience of the feminine strength, the commitment of the sportsman, consolation of the ocean, the taste for transgression, the identity questioning, the refusal of “cela va des soi“.... I still refuse a «cela va de soi» 1 evidence, and still want to examine the nature of this humanity involved in a collective suicide. At the studio, I undress my talk, I turn intimate epiphanies in silent cries, I dare the nudity of silence, the optimistic melancholy, sun in my tears, like a rainbow.

“I LAGGED“ HUMANITY POST-PORTRAIT

I study the post-portrait of our “I lagged humanity“©: a humanity in a cognitive, psychological, and sociological “lag“ face to the uncertainties and the upside-down order of our world, an incessant transit induced by technological, climatic, health revolutions of our post-anthropocene, post-humanist and pre-transhumanist world. Ecopsychology, corporality, matriarchal ideology, intersubjectivity, autonormy, hybridization are the background of researches focused on identity, perception and temporality issues, considered through a sensitive experience (personal and collective) drawn in a “meanwhile“, between memory and present, utopia and dystopia.

PICTORIAL POSITION

My painting does not apply a program, nor does it produce demonstration arguments. Without premeditation, in a primitive approach, the instinct makes signs, marks, which creates new surfaces. A careful reading of the first impulsive gestures generates a second “post-action” analysis time, a time of reconsideration when a new painting comes in the painting, a new workspace where the idea of border (limit) is omnipresent: an oscillation between reality and fantasy (sometimes figuration and abstraction) in the first place, and a dilution / dissection of the areas of distinction (full-empty, interiority-exteriority, superposition -recomposition) in the second place. After a sum of efforts and doubts nourished by a great emotional implication, the gesture enters a zone of “physical thought", a state of suspension of the conscious decision where intuition alone presides over the future of painting.

Inspired by a natural heliotropism, my painting is inexorably oriented towards a “post-neofauvism“: the frank and luminous colors participate in a decisive way in the force of expression, a force exacerbated by the use of plural mediums that are different in their constitution as in their relations: natural pigment vs spray, inks vs oil pastel, watercolor vs fluo ... The study of these relations is an essential component of my work, materials and tones interact as vibration forces between appeasement and excitement, the power of sweetness and intriguing relations. The “organic drawing“ wants to explore the limits of the individual's relationship to his / her nature, his genesis and time (biology, anatomy, metamorphosis ...) giving birth to recurring patterns or lines always related to the human image (interior or exterior)and to the natural world (plant, mineral ... underwater ...). Properly figurative forms recently appeared, without preamble. The painting may seem joyful because the colors but it is much more ambiguous: the variations of supports (always symbolic in their use) or the important work of the surface between appearance and disappearance (layers, overlays ...) carry romantic, poetic sensations but also melancholic or sometimes strangely disturbing feelings.

- / -

In 2020 AT THE FRONT ROW paintings inaugurate the“- / -“ characterized by a radical treatment of the surface inducing a sharing - between caesura and border - of the support, staged in different ways depending on the works (motive, materiality, erasure ...). The "oblique gesture" in itself experiences a third hypothesis, a balance, a backlash, a void in the face of an overly manichean analysis of space (or of a situation). This diagonal division produces a tension effect - accepted as a metaphor for human fears in front of the visible and the invisible, the local and the global, the thinkable and the unthinkable, the real and the virtual, the reassuring and the frightening. The viewer will find in these paintings spaces for meditation, for reassessment of our certainties, subtle warnings carried by the intensity of a silence, before or after a storm. The evocation of a trinity is involuntary, the reference to a median void (see Taoist thought, François Cheng) more realistic. A ternary system, therefore unitary, rather than binary, a logical continuation of the exploration of the "human-space-time", "or body-mind-soul" relationships that I pursue.

A new area of researches around presence, body, identification, or body materialization, brings together free drawing or living models “esquisses“. Primary plastic choices - asceticism of black or white, importance of emptiness, minimalist chromatic gestures - accentuate the contrast between the current materialization of the body in the global society and our biological, spiritual intimacy - the last frontier - that is still preserved. These "drawings" (graphite, painting ...) function as figurative hyper-variations which come as a counterpoint to my pictorial research.

BIOGRAPHY

Franck Cazenave is a French Basque painter, plastic artist, author and curator. Hir work questions individuation1 especially the stakes  of identity, perception and temporality. Each fragment of his work offers spaces for reassessment of the contemporary «I» and gives life to sensual objects (works or experiences) between analysis (or distortion) of reality and the appearance of a poetic materiality. His research generates three fields of activation. The first work space is the most important: its “pictorial position“ (see statement) is the foundation of its overall approach even when painting is not involved. The second space of performance and ive acts experiences a ceremonial context where the tension (audience, duration) upsets and revitalizes the work assumptions. The third space, called new materialism, calls in the “alterism” 2 as a prerequisite for production (Talayatmac, Le Portrait Nu...).

Since 2017, Franck Cazenave proposes “GRAN VOLCANO Eruption“ live act with the musician Arman Melies, in 2018, he begins a collaboration with the dancer Alexandre Castres (first piece “RESPIRO“ presented at the Festival Le Temps d’Aimer). In 2024, he works on the production of “Le miroir, après.“ a project with Alexia Barrier, Marie Bastide, Peggy Bergeron, Sophie Geoffrion, Dune Lunel, Miren Pradier, Blandine Rinkel, Chloé (Thévenin), Virginie Sassoon, and Virginie Tilmont around a reflection on the specular image and the “I” 3.0. He also just launched a whole new round of research called - / -. Unveiled lately (since 2010), his work is already present in more than a hundred private collections (France, Europe, United States, Angola, Japan, Russia...).

“I LAGGED“ HUMANITY POST-PORTRAIT
